What Does a Pelvic Ultrasound Show?
A pelvic ultrasound examines the organs in your lower abdomen and pelvis. In women, this means the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and bladder. In men, it covers the bladder and prostate gland. It's a painless, radiation-free way for your doctor to investigate a wide range of symptoms and conditions.
Transabdominal vs. Transvaginal
Pelvic ultrasound can be performed two ways: transabdominally (over the lower abdomen, with a full bladder to help push the bowel out of the way) or transvaginally (a closer, higher-resolution internal view). Your sonographer will recommend the right approach for what's being investigated — see our page on transvaginal & transrectal ultrasound for more detail on the internal approach.
What It Can Help Diagnose
- Pelvic pain of unknown cause
- Abnormal or heavy menstrual bleeding
- Ovarian cysts and fibroids
- Urinary symptoms and bladder issues
- Prostate gland assessment in men
- Early pregnancy confirmation and monitoring
Preparing for Your Scan
For a transabdominal pelvic scan, you'll usually be asked to arrive with a full bladder — drink water an hour or so beforehand and avoid urinating until after your scan. Our team will confirm specific instructions when you book.
